Enhancing Patient Comfort and Precision in Aesthetic Procedures: The Integration of Facial Nerve Blocks in Non-Surgical Aesthetic Practice

As the demand for non-surgical facial aesthetics procedures continues to rise, so too does the expectation for comfort, precision, and a seamless patient experience. Drawing on a dual background in anaesthetics and aesthetic medicine, I have successfully integrated targeted facial nerve blocks into routine aesthetic practice to enhance both the efficacy and tolerability of advanced procedures.

This presentation explores the use of regional anaesthesia—specifically facial nerve blocks—to reduce procedural pain, minimise patient anxiety, and facilitate more precise technique during injectable treatments and energy-based modalities such as radiofrequency microneedling (e.g., Morpheus8).

I detail the use of a modified scalp block targeting the supratrochlear, supraorbital, zygomaticotemporal, and auriculotemporal nerves. This approach enables comfortable treatment of the scalp, particularly in hair restoration and regenerative therapies that would otherwise be intolerable for many patients. For the mid and lower face, I routinely perform infraorbital, mental, and zygomaticofacial nerve blocks to optimise patient comfort during dermal filler procedures, full-face resurfacing and combination treatments.

By leveraging my anaesthetic expertise within a cosmetic setting, I propose a paradigm shift: the broader incorporation of facial nerve blocks as a standard of care in non-surgical aesthetics. This method not only elevates patient satisfaction but also allows for more controlled, efficient, and technically accurate treatments—ultimately improving clinical outcomes.
